GOOD TO KNOW

Eolas and the consequences
As a consequence of the patent case with the company Eolas, Microsoft has modified IE 6 in a way so that dynamic content, for example Flash or QuickTime movies, does not start automatically anymore. No online advertising delivered by ADTECH is affected by this!
Eaolas and the consequencesWith the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer update ActiveX components are requested in a modified way. After the update they are not started automatically anymore, but have to be activated by the user via an additional mouse click in a dialogue box. More information
Web sites and online tools have to be modified to bypass the previous ActiveX queries and to assure compatibility with the new ActiveX specifications. Because of this there is a slight uncertainty within the business.
ADTECH has made precautions – no problems with ActiveX queries
ADTECH customers do not have to worry. Months ago before the Internet Explorer’s ActiveX update, ADTECH modified its ad service solution HELIOS IQ to the new Microsoft specifications.

ADTECH makes it as easy as possible for the users.
No special booking version is necessary to bypass the ActiveX query – the booking process in HELIOS IQ is as easy as it always has been. The modification in HELIOS IQ is also highly compatible for campaigns that have been active since the Microsoft IE update in June. Just reload the banner in the booking screen and push it into the campaign – finished! All banners delivered by ADTECH may be clicked as always. This applies to all campaign types in HELIOS IQ.

With this quick and successful modification to the new Microsoft ActiveX specifications, once again ADTECH has proven how flexibly HELIOS IQ can be modified to the particular market requirements and customer wishes.

ActiveX modification causes uncertainty in the business
Some companies still need time to make their applications compatible to the ActiveX changes in IE. Microsoft has pointed out the necessary modifications for months and has released the according hints for web site programmers. Still the additional effort caused some turbulence in the Web business.

„The inclusion of the ActiveX changes makes everything a mess for companies deploying and testing Microsoft's monthly patches. I've talked to some of our customers, and they're at the point where they're pulling out their hair”. Mehr dazu im Artikel der Informationweek.com:

Concerning this matter there is some uncertainty in the online advertising sector as well. Not every advertisement provider has a perfect solution that works with complex Flash and Rich-Media advertisement ready yet. Allegedly some banners may not be clicked directly anymore. The user has to acknowledge an ActiveX query first before the ad is shown.

Eolas and the consequences – more information on the ActiveX problem
The ActiveX change became necessary because Microsoft lost an important patent case vs. Eolas in August 2004. This patent is at the bottom of one of the key technologies on the web. The plug-in technology enables the embedding of applications like Flash or QuickTime in HTML documents via ActiveX and starts them automatically in the same browser window.

For example, ActiveX controls are used by the following applications:
- Adobe Reader
- Apple QuickTime Player
- Macromedia Flash
- Microsoft Windows Media Player
- Real Networks RealPlayer
- Sun Java Virtual Machine

For all users that don’t want to install the Microsoft ActiveX update yet, a patch has been made available to prevent the installation of the update for some time. Microsoft has said that this patch is only valid until the Microsoft IE security update is available for download in June. With its availability the changes in the handling of ActiveX controls will become permanent.
